The mission of the Newfoundland and Labrador Prostate Cancer Support Groups is to offer peer support, make available information more accessible and increase awareness of Prostate Cancer in our province. The Newfoundland and Labrador Prostate Cancer Support Groups (NLPCSG) are a network of prostate cancer survivor groups, representing different regions of the province. We have been in existence for sixteen years and are guided and supported by an independent provincial advisory board. The groups are run by survivor volunteers and have a membership over a hundred men, along with their spouses and partners. Our groups meet monthly and several groups have trained presenters who travel around their districts providing awareness presentations to the public

As you may be aware, prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting men in Canada with more than 24,000 new cases expected to be diagnosed this year. Approximately 540 of those cases will be diagnosed in our province with 65 who will lose their battle.

Our organization offers one-on-one prostate cancer peer support with other cancer survivors by either face-to-face, telephone or online services. Since the start of our program, our volunteers have made prostate cancer awareness presentations to an average of 3,000 individuals a year. We help to direct people to available services such as Cancer Patient Navigators, Social Workers with counseling services and Community Health.

We have an excellent relationship with the medical community and with government. We are proud to be recognised as the voice specifically dedicated to prostate cancer support and awareness in this province. All monies raised stay in the province.

Once a year, a prostate cancer conference/event is coordinated where men and their partners gather to provide one another with support and learn about new treatment and research initiatives. Health care providers are invited to present this new information. In addition, we offer educational pamphlets, videos, and books. All materials and services are free.

The major activities of the Newfoundland and Labrador Prostate Cancer Support Groups include:

-       Co-ordinating the activities of the five support groups

-       Co-ordination our Prostate Cancer Peer Support program
